Wake Owl will release their debut album The Private World of Paradise, produced by Richard Swift (Tennis, Foxygen), on March 4th, 2014 via Vagrant Records. An early taste of the upcoming LP debuted online today in the form of first single “Candy,” which premiered on The Music Ninja and can be streamed here: http://www.themusicninja.com/wake-owl-candy-tmn-premiere/. “Candy” is also now available as a digital single: http://smarturl.it/candysingle. The single cover artwork can be seen below.
Recorded with notable producer Swift in his National Freedom studios in Oregon, The Private World of Paradise finds Wake Owl expanding beyond the evocative folk found on debut EP Wild Country, released in January 2013. “Candy” exhibits Wake Owl primary member and singer Colyn Cameron’s growth as a songwriter and pursuit of experimentation with different instrumentation. Working together with multi-instrumentalist Aiden Briscall and Swift, the result is the upbeat atmospheric vibe found throughout the album. “There’s a lot more room in this batch of songs to explore live,” says Cameron. “This was a goal of ours from the outset of writing, trying to create space, so that live we could take people on more of a journey. The music is very visual for us, so there will be a strong visual element in the live set.”
Wake Owl will head out on a Canadian tour in February and March, and a current itinerary can be seen below. US dates and more information on The Private World of Paradise will be announced soon.
Cameron was born and raised in southern California and first began making music 10 years ago as a teenager. After graduating from high school, he trained in organic agriculture at Emerson College in England, worked on different farms throughout the UK, Germany, Chile and Canada and traveled the world. Upon returning home (he now splits his time between Vancouver, BC and Portland, OR), Cameron spent some time playing in bands before deciding to record the songs he had written after his journey, and thus Wake Owl and a completed body of work, the Wild Country EP, were born. Greeted with press attention from outlets including Esquire.com (’15 Music Artists to Watch in 2013’), The AV Club, MTV Hive, The New York Daily News, and Last.fm, among others, Wake Owl performed at SXSW, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, and Sasquatch festival this year in addition to two North American headlining tours.
